Managing your memory

As we age you may notice some changes in the way your memory works. Sometimes you may feel you find it harder to remember certain events or names of people, others might find they are easily distracted. Changes can be part of normal aging for some, or for others it might be due to a medical condition or diagnosis such as Alzheimers dementia or a known mild cognitive impairment.

Depending on your need’s or what is causing your memory changes, an Occupational Therapist can prepare a support plan tailored specifically to your areas of concern. Below are a few general strategies that you can introduce into your daily routine if you are not already doing them.

Strategies for your memory:

  • When completing important tasks, minimise distractions, for example turn the TV off to eliminate background noise
  • Try to do difficult tasks when you are at your best, for example don’t pay the bills when you are tired or just before bed do it at a time when you are alert and able to focus
  • Develop and maintain a routine around your regular activities
  • Keep a note pad next to the phone to write key information down when on the phone
  • Use a diary or a daily planner to record things you need to do or important events and appointments
  • Focus on one task at a time

Whilst strategies for managing your memory are important, it is also important to consider your lifestyle and other things you can do to help your overall health. Evidence shows maintaining an active lifestyle, eating a balanced diet, staying socially active, doing things to challenge your thinking and memory, as well as managing your sleep, alcohol intake and quitting smoking all to be of benefit.
